Making elite handball players look as powerful as they already are
A high-energy TV3 Norway promo that treated elite handball players like cinematic superheroes rather than subjects of a conventional sports spot. I worked on motion design and VFX, using extreme slow motion, stylised lighting and carefully placed energy effects to make a relatively small production setup feel much bigger on screen.
Brief
Handball is fast, physical and emotionally intense. The promo needed to communicate that power rather than simply show match footage.
The creative ambition was closer to a premium sports-brand commercial: isolate the athletes, make every movement feel deliberate and let their real physical ability carry the spectacle.

The Challenge
The look needed to feel expensive without the production machinery usually associated with a large sports commercial.
There were no elaborate motion-control rigs, huge lighting packages or enormous crew. We had to build scale through camera choice, lighting, performance and post-production rather than trying to imitate a bigger shoot badly.
Execution
The athletes were filmed in extreme slow motion so individual passes, shots and blocks could be treated almost like hero moments.
I developed VFX around the real movement rather than covering it: light streaks, energy trails, impact bursts and particles that extended speed and force already present in the footage. Contrast-heavy lighting shaped the players against the background, while the effects followed the action and stayed secondary to the athletes themselves.
The goal was enhancement, not turning professional handball into a superhero film with a sports problem.

Results
The final promo felt larger and more cinematic than the production footprint behind it.
The slow motion and restrained effects gave the players a larger-than-life presence and helped the campaign stand apart from more conventional broadcast sports promos.
Personal Reflection
This project is a good example of why budget and visual ambition are not always the same thing.
A strong treatment, the right footage and disciplined post work can create scale without pretending you had resources you did not. Also, athletes doing genuinely ridiculous things in slow motion make the VFX artist's job considerably easier.
